On Tuesday 10 September 2024 at 12:00 - 13:15 CEST, UNU-MERIT's UNESCO Chair on Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development for Latin America is hosting a hybrid research seminar which will discuss recent work by the research team of the Institute of Economics at the University of the Republic (UDELAR) in Uruguay.
Prof. Dr. Carlos Bianchi, Professor at UDELAR and President of LALICS (the Latin American Network for Economics of Learning, Innovation and Competence-Building Systems) will present his UDELAR team's findings on the problems and challenges of development in middle-income countries, with an emphasis on Latin America. The trajectories of structural change and the so-called ‘erratic paths’ followed by the countries of the region will be discussed.
The LALICS network is the Latin American regional branch of GLOBELICS, a worldwide community of scholars working on innovation and competence-building in the context of economic development. LALICS is initiating a new work plan where their aim is to invite researchers and practitioners in innovation and development who are Latin American (or working on Latin America) to join them in their future activities.
The research seminar will start with an introduction from UNU-MERIT's Prof. Carlo Pietrobelli about UNU-MERIT's UNESCO Chair, and then Prof. Bianchi will speak briefly about the LALICS Network before giving his research presentation, titled 'Varieties of middle-income trap: A Latin American perspective on structural change trajectories and external demand constraints'.
This hybrid event is open to the public; all who are interested in the topic of economic development in Latin America are very welcome to join.
The Zoom link to join the seminar online can be found here.
